Pupil Premium
The pupil premium is a source of extra funding given to schools each year to help improve education outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in schools in England. Individual eligible pupils will attract this funding to the school, but it is not allocated on an individual basis. Schools also do not have to spend pupil premium so it solely benefits eligible pupils. They can use it wherever they identify the greatest need.
Evidence shows that disadvantaged children generally face additional challenges in reaching their potential at school and often do not perform as well as other pupils. Pupil premium spending is seen to be most effective when schools use a tiered approach, targeting spending across 3 areas, with a particular focus on teaching.
School leaders are best placed to assess their pupils’ needs and use the funding to improve attainment, drawing on evidence of effective practice. It is up to school leaders to decide how to spend the pupil premium. We will show how we use this funding and the impact it has on the attainment of disadvantaged pupils in an online statement.
